Local SEO Basics That Move the Map Pack

July 9, 2026 · 5 min read

Local search map pin and business listing

Local SEO has three pillars: relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot move your business, so the work sits in relevance and prominence.

Start with the Google Business Profile. Correct category, complete service list, real photos, accurate hours, and a description written for humans. Half of local listings lose ground on basics alone.

Then fix the website. One page per service, city named naturally in headings and copy, embedded map, clickable phone number, and schema markup. Speed matters because most local searches happen on mobile data.

Citations come next. Name, address, and phone number identical everywhere. Inconsistent listings quietly dilute trust signals.

Reviews are the multiplier. Ask after every completed job, reply to every review within a few days, and mention the service naturally in the reply. A steady trickle beats a burst of twenty reviews in one week.

Post weekly on the profile, track calls and direction requests monthly, and stay patient. Local movement usually shows up between week six and week twelve.
